Staff Services Division: Crime Scene Investigations

The Crime Scene Unit is responsible for the documentation and, along with the Crime Lab, analysis of crime scenes. This can be a very large undertaking, as some crime scenes are very large and complicated. The officers assigned to the Crime Scene Unit have advanced training in this field and are utilized in major crime scene investigations. These officers are available on a 24 hour basis as situations arise. This unit is also responsible for the very large task of receiving, documenting, and storing all evidence and property received by the Police Division. Tens of thousands of items are received annually by this Unit. The effective handling of these items is essential to the prosecution of the guilty and the defense of the innocent. There is currently one lieutenant, one sergeant, two patrol officers, and one civilian assigned to the Crime Scene Unit. All Springfield Police Division Officers have basic training in evidence collection techniques.
